Ana Bastos de Carvalho, MD

Ana Bastos de Carvalho, MD

Ana Bastos de Carvalho, MD, is a full-time instructor at the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Kentucky. She is a medical retina fellow and the co-director of the Global Ophthalmology Division. She also works with Dr. Eric Higgins to optimize and expand the department’s teleretinal screening network, comprising 45 sites state-wide where diabetic retinopathy screening is provided.

Dr. Carvalho attended medical school and completed an ophthalmology residency at the Lisbon Medical School, in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2011, she joined the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky to conduct post-doctoral research in age-related macular degeneration. She subsequently joined the clinical faculty at the department in 2017 to complete a medical retina fellowship. 

Dr. Carvalho is actively involved in research, mainly focusing on implementation of screening for retinal diseases, and has contributed numerous original papers in peer-reviewed journals.

1. Utilize available retinal screening devices as part of regular screening of all patients with diabetes according to the newest American Diabetes Association (ADA)/American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) guidelines.
2. Consider the importance of early screening and treatment relative to the pathophysiology of DR and DME.
3. Evaluate differences among current and emerging therapies for DR and DME and work collaboratively with retina specialists to develop treatment plans based upon efficacy and shared-decision making.
